Landscapes
Landscape paintings by William E. Shumway (Bill Shumway).
Landscapes
When I moved to Oregon, I was very moved by the wildness of the country. I wanted to paint what I saw in front of me. The light, the size of the trees and mountains and the dynamics of the landscape were all new to me. I let go of my focus on abstraction and leaned into an expressive representation of the landscape. I hiked in as many places in Oregon as possible. I painted by myself and with en plein air groups. In 1994-96, I joined Margaret Puckett’s Artists in the Sky group of five artists and painted many aerial works as seen from 1,000 to 1,500 feet above all sectors of Oregon. Night painting, by the light of the moon, has been among my more recent challenges. You can see a lot of the landscape, but you cannot see a majority of the canvas or your pallet.
